Why oppose a solar park?

We all agree that solar is a better source of energy than things like coal, oil, and gas. So you may wonder why we are opposed to this development? Surely it is good for the environment and should just happen? Here are our key objections:

  1. It’s enormous – massive solar parks like this are normally located in desert regions
  2. It’s in the wrong place – a decommissioned coal power station would be better
  3. It will be harmful to wildlife including many protected species of birds, animals and plants
  4. It will destroy a landscape loved and used by thousands of people

These developers stated aim is to produce the lowest cost energy in the UK – but at what cost? And what will the environmental impact be?

It would be as big as Faversham

Map compares the boundaries around the proposed solar power station site and the town of Faversham - they are the same size

Did you know that this development is as big as the entire town of Faversham? The site is 890 acres or 360 hectares in size – about as big as 640 football pitches.

  1. They have now increased their land grab to 1,000 acres. What’s 1000 acres?
It’s about 30 times as big as The Pentagon
It’s about 45 times as big as Alcatraz
It’s about 55 times as big as Buckingham Palace
It’s about 75 times as big as Windsor Castle
    It’s just too much!

  2. Are you sure you would even end up with a solar park? …and not just a massive cheap timber-framed housing estate (after some reason was cooked up as to why the solar park could not be built)? …housing development by stealth? Anyway …while we are on the subject of house building, why isn’t it just made law now that all new built houses and other buildings must have solar panels built into their roofs? These would provide enough power for that building plus extra to feed into the grid. Also if older buildings were re-roofed …same applies. That way, would we need to have solar parks? No extra land gets used for solar power generation. I suppose such bold and decisive action is beyond most politicians!
